Julie Parker's Get Schooled Workshop 2011

I attended Julie Parker's Get Schooled Workshop with Tracy this month. I can not even express to you how scared I was going into this thing, I did not feel that I was anywhere near the caliber of photographer I needed to be to even attend a workshop at this level.. but my BFF Sissy encouraged me and convinced me that I could do it.

I am so glad I attended, I was surprised at how much i LEARNED...

i LEARNED that EVEN I could do this... i LEARNED that it is ok to shoot in AV mode, shoot JPEG files, and have have a short attention span... and when I am having a good day shoot in Manual... and work towards RAW, if I want to. No pressure.

i LEARNED that when 20 other photographers are crowded around two models that you all get about the same shot and that you can't get that awesome picture unless your aggressive... and i LEARNED that I am not aggressive.

i LEARNED that too much Photoshop is a bad thing and that keeping it simple gets you good comments on your critique from Julie (yea me!) and i LEARNED that my sissy is really as awesome as I thought she was, Julie made the comment that she had one of her favorite pictures of the day.

i LEARNED that when you shoot beautiful people, you get beautiful pictures no matter what, you could not go wrong this this couple.

i LEARNED that even a 14 year old can be beautiful, smart, and a talented Photographer. This is Wren, Julies daughter and one of our models.

i LEARNED that it is OK to shoot the little details. This is Mr Stegan's beautiful Ford that we used as a prop at the end of the day. I had to take a few shots of it, it was so pretty, besides the scrapbooker in me likes the little detail shots.

i LEARNED that it is ok to put yourself out there and try something new. If your looking for a fun workshop to learn a few tricks of the trade, or to network with a bunch of other photographers I recommend Julie Parker's Workshop, but you will have to wait a while... she only holds one a year.

Thanks Julie... it was a great :)

Thanks Tracy for the fun two days filled with laughter, good conversations, good food and fun adventures **

Eeyore Day

What is wrong with me today? I feel like Eeyore, all doom and gloom… I hate it and yet I am just in a funk!

I feel like a huge weight is on my shoulders and I can’t figure out how to lift it today, I know I will, I always do, but I am struggling today.

Typically when I get like this I focus on my kids or others and then my worries and fears melt away… but I have and it is making things worse today.

I have avoided the TV all weekend, the news and images coming out of Japan after the 9.0 earthquake (upgraded from 8.7 over the weekend) and Tsunami are absolutely heartbreaking. The death toll is rising and was near 2000 as of this morning. As if that is not enough for these poor people to endure now there is fear that the nuclear reactors that are used to provide power and electricity to the region are overheating, and people are preparing for a core meltdown. I feel so sad for all of the mothers that have lost their children, their homes, and their sense of normal and routine. In such a few short minutes everything they had was torn apart and destroyed.

It is not helping that when there is an earthquake someplace else the focus instantly turns to the Wasatch front, when will our quake hit? And then more weight is added to me. How do I protect my children? How to I gather them all together, this next year all of my kids will be going to different schools and both of the boys will be miles from our neighborhood. How do I prepare beyond food storage, water, gas for the 4 wheeler… more than that how do I do it alone? What if what I have done is not enough?

Coming to work today has not helped wither. Ever since the news of my client (Adobe) leaving our facility, and consolidating their distribution back east, a big black cloud has been hanging over head. Layoffs are inevitable, and the cut will be deep, they were a good account. The assumption is that the Adobe business team will be let go, it is not easy to walk around with that weight every day. I have mouths to feed, bills to pay, a mortgage… but who here doesn’t? The loss of a job to anyone that I work with will be difficult; I have worked with some of these people for over 15 years.

When sadness of disasters and financial un-surety are not looming over my head my mind lingers to other things that I feel are selfish. Like the fact the garage door opener broke last night, how much is that going to cost to repair? Or that Cameron broke two more of my already falling apart blinds that are getting so brittle from doing their job for 14 years that when a toy tool box is thrown at them they crack and break apart. Or that Alexis is graduating this year, what do I get for a graduation gift and how will I help pay for college? And even more selfish thinking… if I call myself a photographer how is it that I recently screwed up big time and will a better camera help me suck less?

I want to just give up, stay home with my boys during the day, have someone else protect us, let them worry about disasters and financial security, have them repair what is broken and take away my worries, my fears and my sadness… I don’t want to have all of this weight.
Here comes the teeter totter affect, now that I have the pity-me feeling, I feel guilty, I still have so much more than people that are truly suffering in Japan and other parts of the world today, who am I to complain about broken blinds, garage doors, or anything actually.

Today I am Eeyore, I don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, and I can’t see beyond the rain clouds outside, I wouldn’t even be able to find happiness in a pint of Ben and Jerry’s at this point.
I’ll be ok… I will shake this off. When I pick up the boys at daycare this evening we will play the “Guess What?!” game and when they scream the answer it always makes me smile…. “I LOVE YOU MOM!”

An Unmarried Woman

I am so excited about getting this little paper. It is like a reminder that I can do things on my own. I have come a long way to get to this point of owning my own home. But I am slightly intrigued by this document… What do they mean by “An Unmarried Woman”?

Are they rubbing it in? “An Unmarried Woman” (Apparently she couldn’t find a man, so got a house.)

Are they happy for me? “An Unmarried Woman” (Woo-Hoo! Good Job!!!)

It is a public record, so maybe they are just advertising for me? “An Unmarried Woman” (SWFw/H seeking SWM)
And why don't they put "An Unmarried Man" when men buy homes?

December 2010

December 2010

In December Alexis asked Kolton Daley to PG High Preference dance. Kolton attended Kinderland when Alexis did and they met back up on Facebook. Ya, strange I know. They hit it off really well, they had a lot of fun together, but the relationship was did not last long. Alexis said she had fun hanging out with Kolton while they did, and left it at that.

This is a Camel, he came from the Bunko white elephant gift exchange (wait, irony... I got a camel in an elephant exchange... sorry easily amused). He was named Andy and sent on adventure. Hopefully someday Andy comes to visit again while he is out and about.

December is always a crazy busy month, as if they all aren't, add presents, and gifts, and shopping, and... well you get the point. So we made it a point to squeeze in a trip to Thanksgiving Point to see the lights. It was on Becky's priority list for the moth, so we had to make it happen, and we did.

Making cookies for Santa was another one. The highlight of this event was watching Cameron frost a cookie for Santa, then lick it off, re-frost, lick.... and then place the cookie onto the Santa plate for him. He was very proud.

Christmas morning started with the same routine, shower, get dressed , THEN presents. I know torture right. But when it was time to go down stairs it was so exciting! Just look at Kyles face it tells it all.

Part of our traditions is to get everyone a Christmas ornament for their tree, so when they leave they can decorate with memories on their first Christmas away from home. When I saw this little Hum Bug at Hallmark I instantly thought of Cameron, not sure why, other than I think he is so dang cute!

This year we shoot things up a bit and Santa put all the presents under the kids tree in the family room. Good thing too because it was overflowing!

Cameron was not sure about all the excitement, he took his time opening each and every gift he received. He wanted to then play with each and every gift he received.

Becky gave each of the girls new smelly stuff... Alexis finally got the one she wanted for YEARS.

Brittany was very happy with her mountain of clothing. So happy that she took this one of herself.

Onto grandmas house... Cameron is just getting the hang of this present thing... still slow and steady.

These new guns from Grandma and Grandpa are really cool... and noisy... thank you Grandma and Grandpa!

WHAT THE! ...SANTA! iPads for all 3 girls (Tracy looks left out here). Donovan and Grandma Hanna were EXTRA nice this year.

They don't look happy do they?

Back home after all the excitement... the Wii games come out. Zack and Alexis break out the moves.

Then all the girls get in on the action. Santa was good this year.

Looking back was a lot of fun. 2010 was a good year filled with many good memories. I am thankful for the time that I was able to spend with my kids and I hope that they cherish the moments we have together as much as I do. I love each and every one of them and I am so proud of my kids.
I am glad we added Becky to our crazy home for as long as she needs a place to stay, she adds a lot of fun and support to our family.
Now to focus on making 2011 as great, if not better, than last year!

More words From Kyle

After being picked up from daycare on a cold rainy day this week…..

“Mom, I want my daddy”
“why?”
“cuz I am cold and he is warm”
“What am I Kyle?”
“Your hot mom!”
“Thank you Kyle.”
“You’re welcome.”

Last night after being picked up from his dad’s, sitting in his car seat on the way home…

“Mom I'm hungry”
“Why Kyle, didn’t you eat with your dad?”
“ya, but he threw up all over my food, (long pause) then I couldn’t eat it”
Me turning to Becky… “Makes you wonder what really happened doesn’t it.”

November 2010

November 2010

Wow, so near the end now... this little picture review has brought back a lot of memories, and I have loved to see how much the kids have changed.

Cameron turned 2 on the 4th. For his birthday we went to Chucky Cheese, talk about a happy little boy; he was in light blinking, noisy, kid running around freely, kind of a heaven. Kyle and the girls enjoyed their time too, racking up as many tickets as they could.

This birthday boy checking out the "Band" on stage.

The kids were with their dad for Thanksgiving, and when they are gone for any extended amount of time I go stir crazy... so I decided to paint the family room. I thought the color I had on the walls, a light mocca color, was dark... till I started putting on "Fawn". It turned out nice and I was so proud to get it all done in two days.

Wow, I know i did a lot in November.... but just did not capture it in pictures, I need to work on getting more of the day to day stuff.

Dee's Dances

I believe I have made it very clear that I am not ready for this dating thing. I am not ready for the on-line single sites, the church singles activities, blind dates… any of it.

I said I am not ready, but that does not mean I am not open or willing to try.

Apparently it takes my neighbor, Sandy, to get me out of the house and to try something outside my comfort zone. She has mentioned several times that she wants to try a church singles dance… umm, ya I hear only the 80+ crowd attend those dances. Becky and I have even joked about doing a drive by and if only Buick’s and Cadillac’s are in the parking lot we were just going to keep on going.

Well her first attempt to get me to go to a dance failed, I bailed out and we went to a movie instead.

I was worried that I was going to eventually have to go, so I talked to a friend at work who suggested Dee’s Dances. So I looked into these mysterious Dee’s Dance and discovered that they are single dances with church standards, not church sponsored. They play more of the modern top 40’s music and tend to have less of the 80+ crowd. Ok, this sounds a little better.

So Saturday comes around and the three of us are all ready to go. Nervous, a little scared, and a whole lot freaked out.

The dances are held in a different spot from week to week, this one was at Trolley Square in Salt Lake, as we walk in I notice I was getting more and more sick to my stomach. Was I really ready for this?

Becky, Sandy and I all hesitated as we neared the entrance… then I just said “All right let’s go!” and jumped up and paid…. My enthusiasm fizzled out shortly after that. I felt like I was in a foreign country and I did not speak the language or know the culture at ALL!

At first glance there were people of all age groups, 25 to, oh let’s say, 80. The music was a mix of 80’s, 90’s, and current, with a few 70’s songs mixed in…. not top 40 at all. The attire ranged from themed (like green hair) to jeans and a t-shirt, all the way to formal attire. The Trolley Square location was ok, not to big, but enough room to move around, and it allowed for easy viewing of the gene pool we had to work with.

Within minutes of stepping across the line into this foreign land Sandy was swept away by the sweet request to dance from a foreigner, no I am not joking he really was a foreigner. That was when Becky and I bailed to take our coats back to the Jeep. While passing a bar and jokily suggesting we stop and get a drink before heading back… no time for that we just left Sandy with a stranger and we needed to return quickly.

Upon returning we went to the observation tower, actually it was the 2nd floor balcony that overlooked the dance floor. We picked out a few that were “not so bad” and a few “must avoid at all cost” and then decided to take the pack method and all go dance together.

Now I do not want to come off as rude or insensitive in any way, I do not believe that I am all that (we will get back to this point later) but strictly to identify individuals I assigned them names. There was the ‘Small Asian with the Ski Cap’, ‘White Sweater Boy’, ‘Red U of U Sweatshirt Guy’, ‘Tuxedo Man’, ‘ Red Plaid Shirt Guy’, and ‘Grease Lightning’ to just name a few.

So as we moved from one side of the room it appeared that the older you were the farther away from the speakers you danced, based on that we should have been someplace in the middle, but we got closer to the speaker side for safety.

The three of us danced with occasionally some other person popping in like ‘White Sweater Guy’ out of nowhere and leaving without saying a word, weird. Maybe because we came to the conclusion that if you did not make eye contact that they would not see you or acknowledge you then they would leave you alone, this rule was put to the test several times and only worked about half the time.

Sandy was the winner, she was asked to dance more than Becky and I. One of the guys she dances with was a Rocket Scientist who works for Obama… uh, hu… ya right. Another time the girls were trying to save me from a regular in this foreign land and told me I was very into the story I was telling them, Sandy looked away for just a fleeting second and BAM!!! she was asked to dance! Her last dance was with ‘Tuxedo Guy’ She pulled out all the stops with him and started to swing… Go Sandy!

Overall it was not that bad, getting out with the girls was a lot of fun. I am willing to do it again. Even though I was never asked to dance, see I told you I am not all that, but it was ok, it was my first time out and baby steps are ok here. Besides apparently there are a lot of regulars at these Dee’s Dances, like ‘Grease Lightning’ she seemed very friendly with her Cha Cha from Grease attire and appeal, she was very friendly… very, very friendly.

October 2010

OCTOBER 2010

Whew, we are getting near the end of my 2010 year in picture review, maybe this year I need to be more on top of things and I won't need to review the entire year in 2012.

So Alexis is a Senior at PG High School and I have encouraged her to be more active in attending activities like school sporting events, and I have to say she has done much better than in years past. For the PG Homecoming game the new "G" on the side of the mountain was lit up. It has been a few years since it was lit, and they received funding to install lights. It was a kind of cool thing, so while Alexis and her friends were at the game I took Brittany, Courtney and the boys for a ride to get as close as we could to see it light up.

Thanksgiving Point Corn Bellies was fun to go with the boys, they got a kick out of running around, and away from us to play on everything. I personally think that the girls even had a good time. Here are Courtney and Britt having rubber duck races.

My Pumpkin stud.

See what I mean they had a good time too.

Cameron trying to figure out this pump thing to make the water push his duck...

Looks like he figured it out.

Cameron had a great time.

See how happy Kyle is here, see that big "Monster" in the background... ya lets just say he did not have the same happy face when we tried to get him to go through that... he never went.

Ever think about installing one of these in your back yard?

We went to the farm with Melanie during the month, this pass this is awesome!

Alexis and Tucker off to PG High Homecoming.

What is it about a mom's bed being the best place to sleep?
Not one... but two little boys...

Umm.. guys, were am I supposed to sleep?

Kyle still talks about this, we went for a ride on the Heber Rail Road, AKA Heber Creeper. It was a beautiful day, and even though the ride itself is rather uneventful, watching the boys was worth every bit of it! (and I LOVE this picture).

Cameron and Kyle had their heads out the window like dogs for the majority of the ride.

Brittany ate her popcorn and chilled, till I pointed a camera at here then she sprang to life and put on a big smile.

Oh my gosh is he cute, I can say that I'm his mom.

Alexis and Court attended a Murder Mystery Party at Zack's house, and guess what, no one got shot or went to the ER at this one.

Courtney and Zack were married... don't they look like a happy couple?

OK, Seriously the BEST part of October is Halloween! I LOVE to decorate for Halloween.
One of the new additions to the decor, big spider here... I think she needs a name.

I love my front room all decked out with witches.

The new "Stoned" witch hanging from the mossy branches... I was proud of this set up.

Becky gave me a Fall Fairy, so cute! (I think she was to break up all the scary stuff in the house that she had to overcome.)

At Bunko I got this little dandy, a spell book... hmmm where will that fit in? The Witches Room!

The pond had special fog this year, it smells like Mojito Rum, I had to do it, I have drunk pirates all over...
Everything outside looked really cool too.. until it had a coat of snow all over it... I am not sure it it made it creepier or not.

I say no, can you even see the coffin under all that snow?

The pirate looks like he has hair. That's not scary.

The snow made it hard for me to use my new bubble machine too, with techno bubble that glow in the dark! Next year...
